So many aspects of goldfields history suggest that truth is so much stranger than fiction. Take ‘Hoover House’, for example. It has been gloriously restored and sits within metres of the edge of what is now a vast open pit gold mine. A fine Federation-era bungalow, it was commissioned as the Mine Manager’s Residence for the Sons of Gwalia Gold Mine in 1898, and its commissioner was a brash and ambitious 23-year-old American by the name of Herbert Clark Hoover. At the time, he was in charge of the mine. Thirty years later, in 1928, he would be elected the 31st President of the United States of America.
